Getting started with Naviguard

Navigating the health care landscape, especially the out-of-network billing part, can be complicated. So, we’ve made it as easy as possible to use Naviguard®. Below are the steps to our process. If it seems simple, that’s because it is.

As a member, how do I get started?

Naviguard is available to you at no additional cost through your employer’s health care benefits.

Check the Explanation of Benefits

If you receive care from an out-of-network provider, you should check the Explanation of Benefits to determine if you are being balance billed (if the amount you owe is higher than your cost share). Before paying your bill, talk with a Naviguard Advisor to explore your options.

Activate the Naviguard benefit

If you receive a balance medical bill from your provider, you should call the member phone number on your health plan ID card to activate the Naviguard benefit. Naviguard will send you an email with simple instructions for creating a Naviguard account online.

Send us your information

After you create your secure online account, you will follow the steps provided in an email from Naviguard to upload your bill and answer a few questions about what happened. We understand that people are busy, so if any information is missing, we'll email you with friendly reminders. An Advisor is available to answer any questions you may have at any stage of the process.

Case review

After you provide all the necessary information, a dedicated Advisor will review your case with the negotiation team and provide updates on possible next steps. Once the negotiation process has started, your Advisor will keep you updated on the status of the case with information from the negotiator.

Review the results 

On average, the negotiation process takes about 25 days, depending on how responsive the provider is. As soon as the case has been resolved, your Advisor will contact you with details of the outcome and guidance on what to do next.

  • How Naviguard can help reduce your balance medical bill

    Naviguard was created to help reduce the amount you may owe for medical care from out-of-network providers. Our experts will review your case to determine if you have been balance billed.

    If you were billed too much, our negotiators may contact the provider on your behalf to try to agree on a lower amount. Naviguard does all the negotiating and will keep you updated throughout the process.

    For example, Naviguard can negotiate excessive charges from specialists, X-rays, lab analysis and other common out-of-network care situations. You don't need to do anything except complete the steps below to get started.

    When to use Naviguard

    If you received care from an out-of-network provider, look at the Explanation Of Benefits (EOB) you get from UnitedHealthcare. If the amount you owe is higher than your cost share, you may receive a balance medical bill from the provider. When you receive your bill, call us before you pay it so we can review it and negotiate it with your provider.
